danhilden > A peace rally in Ayacucho, the birthplace of leftist rebel groups that have terrorized the region since the 80´s, calls for an end to the on going violence. The most feared group, The Shining Path, was started by Abimael Guzman, a proffesor at the San Cristóbal of Huamanga University in Ayacucho. Between 1980 and 2000 69,280 died as a result of the conflict between the Shining Path, local government backed militias, and the Peruvian military. About one third of those died at the hands of government forces, who would torture and kill innocent villagers to avenge the deaths of their friends and get information. Fomer President Alberto Fujimori was recently found guilty of crimes against humanity, and will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. While they are are few and far between, clashes between government forces and what is left of rebels still take place.

danhilden > People march for an end to violence in Ayacucho.

danhilden > A two day stike in response to the US military setting up a base in the area shut down Ayacucho on July 8th and 9th. Most businesses closed, and all motorized transportation stopped. Marches ended in the burning of US flags in the main square, while the crowd chanted ¨fuera Norteamericanos de Ayacucho,¨ meaning ¨go away North Americans of Ayacucho.¨ The US says that the military is only there for humanitarian aid work, but the people fear that their real motives include expanding the drug war and opening the door for US corperations who want to exploit the Amazon and look for oil.
