In November of 2007 66 people were arrested in almost two weeks of protests spurred by the military's use of the Port of Olympia to ship supplies to and back from Iraq. After a couple of days of locking down the port, protesters were forcefully kept out of the way by local police. Months later, on Valentines Day, small riot broke out after a performance of the hip-hop group 'Dead Prez' at the Evergreen State College when a crowd of about 200 people surrounded the police car and demanded the release of a man who had been arrested during the show. After more police officers tried to break up the crowd with pepper spray, a small group started to throw rocks and whatever else they could find. One car wouldn't start when the police were trying to escape the crowd, so it was abandoned, and quickly destroyed. Five people were later arrested for their involvement in the desruction of the police car, and the college paid for the damage. It is believed that the riot was fueled by anger left over by the Olympia Police Department's handling of the port protests.
